Congratulations to Nick Sommers!

Congratulations to Nick Sommers, a young driver brand new to SCCA and SFR. The SFR Double Regional 1-2 AV8 Super Cars was his first-ever SCCA race. Nick came to SFR from other venues, including karting and NASA. The high school senior has been road racing since he was 14, the age when NASA allowed him to run. Due to track age limitations at the time, Thunderhill is the main track on which Nick has raced.

Nick and his father, Greg, who had to sign a Minor Waiver to allow Nick to race, had some difficulties in maneuvering the SCCA licensing process and were referred to Gary Meeker, NorPac Driver License Administrator. According to Dad, it was amazing how Meeker cut through the red tape and got Nick his license PDQ, based on his prior experience.

Nick rewarded his Dad and Meeker by doing them proud at Thunderhill. He took the pole position for both races and won both races in No.83 SMT 1993 Mazda Miata. And this was the largest group – 36 cars on the track out of 41 entries.

Sommers won overall and first in Class in Group Seven both days. Both days he qualified ahead of his friend and fellow high school senior, two year veteran in Mazdas, Tommy McCarthy in No.23 SM 2001 Mazda Miata, who gridded first in SM.

Nick explained that SMTs are Miata’s running on Toyo Tires, and SMs are Miata’s running on Hoosier Tires. Sommers said the Toyo’s are harder tires than the Hoosiers.

In Race One Sommers led from flag to flag and turned the fastest race lap of 2:08.487/80.301 mph. His Margin of Victory was 15.340 seconds, ahead of Tim Auger in No.07 SM 1994 Mazda Miata. Alas, McCarthy pitted while leading SM, with a differential problem.

Sommers was one of those helping McCarthy get ready for Race Two. Again they gridded 1-2, and had a good battle, nose to tail. McCarthy got by for two laps, but Sommers recovered to take the photo-finish victory.

Congratulations, Nick and Greg!
